The Internet, a confident friend, and modern medicines

Three things that make my life better:

The Internet
From 1994 to 1996, I was lucky enough to travel around much of the United States playing a card game for a living. The Internet, and the World Wide Web, were immature at the time, and I did not use it to travel around. By the time I traveled to, and lived in, other countries, I had the benefit of email and great websites. Without those things, I would be too isolated from my friends.

Josh
Honestly, I do not understand why he has such strong faith in me. Some days, when I do not believe in myself, I rely on his faith in me so I can get through the day.

Medicine
Omeprazole packageDespite how advanced the medical arts and medical sciences are, our knowledge of health and disease is still primitive. Nevertheless, we do have some amazing medicines such as antibiotics, vaccines, aspirin, and oral contraceptives. Today, my acid reflux is quite painful, but after I write this, I will take 20 mg of omeprazole and my symptoms will disappear for at least two days and possibly a week. Only twenty years ago, I would have had to take multiple antacids each day for only a little relief. Two-hundred years ago, if I were wealthy enough, I would have tried a variety of quack medicines and maybe eat some foods, but mostly I would just have to suffer. Cheap, effective, widely-available medicine has transformed the human condition.
