Science begets art in science

An important part of the patent and copyright regime is the idea that science begets science and that art begets art. I previously blogged about how creativity in art leads to more art, and the following video shows how science can lead to more art.

The author of the video is showing how he “mashed up” various technologies–Wii, portable computing, software, video projection, and infrared–to create a sophisticated performance machine, which allows him to expand his artistic performances. Sciences and arts are linked and advancements in one field will lead to advancements in other fields.

The patent and trademark system should promote–not hinder–these advancements. When evaluating the legal regime, the most important question to ask: does it promote innovation or does it stifle innovation by preventing people from building new art and new science?
