Nigerians sue Shell in the Netherlands

Four Nigerians citizens sued Shell in the Netherlands for environmental damage allegedly caused by Shell’s Nigerian subsidiary in Nigeria.

Context of the story:

Why is this important? Nigeria is oil rich but economically poor, and environmental damage is part of the problem for many poor Nigerians. Furthermore, rebels have attacked many oil facilities in Nigeria claiming that companies like Shell are bad for Nigeria.

Who is involved? Four Nigerians and Friends of the Earth, an environmental organization. Royal Dutch Shell is an international oil company.

Where is this happening? The lawsuit was filed in the Netherlands, Europe–the headquarters of Shell. But the alleged damage is in Nigeria, a large country on the coast of west Africa.

What can you do? This is an excellent example of non-violent conflict resolution–support efforts like this. Study law. Learn about environmental issues.
