The US removed North Korea from the list of states that sponsor terrorism, and North Korea has now announced it will resume disabling its nuclear program.
Context of the story:
Why is this important? North Korea has developed nuclear weapons since 2000 as a deterrence from attack by the US and its allies. Some argue, however, that North Korea has developed the nuclear program as a bargaining tactic to fight against economic sanctions imposed on the isolated communist country. In either case, most agree that the often-belligerent North Korea possessing nuclear weapons is dangerous.
Who is involved? The “six-party talks” involve the US, North Korea, South Korea, China, Russia, and Japan.
Where is this happening? North Korea shares a peninsula with South Korea. It has a long, mountainous border with China, a small border with Russia, and it is very close to Japan.
