Imagine you are a United States citizen living in the United States. You are a straight white male. You have a college degree. You have health insurance. You don’t have any disabilities. You have good credit. You identify as a Christian. You recognize there are systemic and endemic inequalities and disenfranchisements based on sexism, racism, and classism. And, that because of that, you directly benefit from those things. You disapprove of that behavior. You want those problems to change. And, you put a lot of effort into not being a bigot. But, this is one of the reasons why things don’t change. The people with the most power to return power to the people from whom it was stolen are directly incentivized to do nothing, to keep things as they are. If you benefit from power being stolen from others, even if power is also being stolen from you, it doesn’t matter what you say your ideology is. It only matters what you do.
