This is the record of the origin of
Jesus the Messiah, Descendant of David, Descendant of Abraham.
Abraham was the father of Isaac. Isaac was the father of Jacob. And Jacob was the father of Judah and his 11 brothers.
Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar. Perez was the father of Hezron. And Hezron was the father of Ram.
Ram was the father of Amminadab. Amminadab was the father of Nahshon. And Nahshon was the father of Salmon.
Salmon was the father of Boaz by Rahab. Boaz was the father of Obed by Ruth. And Obed was the father of Jesse.
And Jesse was the father of David the king. David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah.
Solomon was the father of Rehoboam. Rehoboam was the father of Abijah. And Abijah was the father of Asa.
Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat. Jehoshaphat was the father of Joram. And Joram was the father of Uzziah.
Uzziah was the father of Jotham. Jotham was the father of Ahaz. And Ahaz was the father of Hezikiah.
Hezikiah was the father of Manasseh. Manasseh was the father of Amon. And Amon was the father of Josiah.
Josiah was the grandfather of Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the deportation to Babylon.
After the deportation to Babylon, Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel. And Shealtiel was the grandfather of Zerubbabell.
Zerubbabell was the father of Abiud. Abiud was the father of Eliakim. And Eliakim was the father of Azor.
Azor was the father of Zadok. Zadok was the father of Achim. And Achim was the father of Eliud.
Eliud was the father of Eleazar. Eleazar was the father of Motthan. And Motthan was the father of Jacob.
Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, from whom was born Jesus, who is called the Messiah.
So there were fourteen generations from Abraham to David, fourteen generations from David until the deportation to Babylon, and fourteen generations from the deportation to Babylon until the Messiah.
Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way: his mother, Mary, was promised in marriage to Joseph, but before they had come together, she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.
Her husband Joseph was a just man, and unwilling to disgrace her in public, he planned to release her quietly.
But as he pondered these things, behold, an angel of God appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, descendent of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. She shall give birth to a son. You shall name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
All this took place so that what was spoken by God through the prophet might be fulfilled, “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall give birth to a son, and they shall call him Immanuel,” which means, “God is with us.”
Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of God told him, and took his wife to himself; and did not have marital relations with her until she had given birth to a son, and Joseph named him Jesus.
